Robot Reticulations

A continuation of the Utzon 40, Robotic Reticulations explored a larger pavilion for the Opera House forecourt using purely timber. The project employed doubly curved CNC cut plywood to produce a reciprocal frame that was structurally optimised in collaboration with ARUP engineers. The computational design workflow integrated Finite Element Analysis (FEA) into Rhino 3D to control timber element rotation correlated to structural forces. The project also introduced a polycarbonate skin to create shelter from the rain.
